Honoring Mara Raider

How does such a big heart fit into such a tiny body? Mara Raider started working at the Coalition on Homelessness in 1991 as a young, bright-eyed, idealistic college student. Almost 16 years later, we are sad to announce Mara Raider is leaving the Coalition.

Hogares sin Barreras Celebrates 12 Years of Struggle

Today, even cultures that contain strong safety nets for preventing homelessness are finding that more and more people are slipping through cracks in the structures of family, community, and faith that used to protect them and finding themselves on the streets. And when individuals from such a culture come to this country lacking even the benefit of language skills to help them navigate the perilous shoals of our more socially indifferent culture, they are likely to find themselves truly at sea.

JACKIE HENDERSON CLARK: 1970—2004

In the month of August, Jackie Henderson passed away. Jackie was a greatly loved staffperson at the Coalition on Homelessness, in the Family Rights and Dignity project. She most recently worked for Riley Center, outposted at the CalWORKS office where she tirelessly assisted women affected by domestic violence.

Jackie touched countless numbers of us in her community work to alleviate homelessness, poverty, domestic violence and mental illness among families.

Edición Popular en Español: Dolores St. Community Services

Desde su fundación en 1982 este centro ha sido refugio para refugiados centro-americanos, este programa consta de 120 camas de emergencia que provee alojamiento y apoyo a hombres sin vivienda principalmente de area de la Mision en San Francisco.

El Programa de Vivienda Dolores (DHP) es el provedor mas grande de servicios del area de la Mision y el unico que esta enfocado a los hombres latino americanos sin vivienda,proporcionando ademas comidas, cuidado medico y servicio de apoyo adaptado a a las necesidades culturales individuales.

EDICIÓN POPULAR EN ESPAÑOL: Marcha por las licencias de manejar para inmigrantes

El pasado 5 de mayo se llevó a cabo una acción conjunta de varias organizaciones comunitarias para exigir el derecho de todos los inmigrantes a obtener una licencia para conducir en el estado de California.

Acciones como esta se llevaron a cabo por todo el estado y en ellas se manifestó el descontento por la falta de atención a este problema que cada vez cuesta más dinero a nuestra comunidad, ya que muchas personas tienen que arriesgarse a conducir sin la documentación requerida y se ven expuestos a toda clase de abusos por parte de las autoridades que terminan por decomisar los vehículos, creando una perdida económica a esta personas que se ven obligadas a conducir en esta situación.

Día del niño

El día primero de Mayo se llevó a cabo la celebración del día del niño, organizado por el Grupo de Formación de Mujeres de Hogares Sin Barreras. El día del niño es una fecha que se celebra en los países latinoamericanos para festejar a los niños que son el futuro del mundo.

Signs of the Times

You have probably seen them: the signs on MUNI buses and Yellow Cabs showing tourists and foxy locals, enjoying the City or hip urban lifestyles, including giving money to panhandlers. Such well-meaning alms, the signs harshly conclude, facilitate drug deaths, sexual diseases, and the demise of neighborhood businesses — things well-meaning people generally frown upon. (more…)

This past year the American public solidified its collective denial while the American juggernaut lurched ever closer to war with a frequently re-defined Axis of Evil, meaning very few local stories that didn’t involve crimes, scandals, or violence managed to penetrate the national news sources’ seasonal “white out” of feel-good holiday articles contrived to spotlight some high-profile charitable institution.
